Gas-leaking-and-detect

A Simple guide – Gas leak-step and safety measures

A gas leak is a serious hazard that can result in an explosion or fire. If you suspect a gas leak, it is important to take proper steps to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you. In this blog post, we will explore what to do if you suspect a gas leak. We will cover steps such as evacuating the area, shutting off the gas supply, and more. Gas leaks can be dangerous, so it is important to be informed and know what to do in case of an emergency.

How Can I tell if there is gas leak

If you think you may have a gas leak, it is important to take immediate action. You should leave the area immediately and call your gas company or the fire department.

There are a few ways you can tell if there is a gas leak:

  • You may smell a sulphur or “rotten egg” smell. This is the most common way people realise they have a gas leak.
  • You may hear a hissing or whistling sound coming from your appliances or pipes.
  • You may see dust or debris blowing around near your appliances or pipes.

If you suspect there is a gas leak, it is important to act quickly and safely. Leave the area immediately and call your gas company or the fire department.

Getting to a safe distance

If you believe there is a gas leak in your home, it is important to take immediate action.

The first step is to call your gas company. If you smell gas, open all the doors and windows in your house to let the gas out.

Do not turn on any lights, fans, or appliances.

Do not smoke or use a lighter near the area of the suspected leak.

Once you have evacuated your home, do not re-enter until you have been given the all-clear by your gas company.

Calling Authorised personals

Get to a safe distance from the building, then call the gas company from a cell phone or a neighbour’s phone. Or dial 000 in case there is any severe injury. You can also call  Australian Gas Networks (1800 427 532).

It’s your gas supplier’s responsibility to make sure the infrastructure is safe for your home, up to and including your gas meter. If you think you have a leak and your supplier identifies it, they will arrange for a maintenance crew to fix the problem.

Calling Emergency Gas Plumbers

When your gas company or emergency services informs you that the source of the gas leak is coming from inside your home, the next person you should call is an emergency gas plumber.

Why? Because Gas plumbers are experts in dealing with gas problems.

We are professionals who deal with specific leak issues such as maintaining nad repairing gas fittings like pipes, lines, and valves.

At a minimum, our technicians are trained in:

  • Repair and Maintenance of gas plumbing
  • Connection and Installation of gas appliances
  • Setting up of gas connections and lines

Many plumbers in their later years up-skill to offer gas-related services. Some even take certifications on gas work, which is great for those who are working within the industry. It’s important to note, however, that while many plumbers offer these services, not all plumbers are licensed gas fitters.

Once the leak has been repaired, make sure all appliances are turned off before relighting them. If you have any questions or concerns about gas leaks, don’t hesitate to contact your gas company or a qualified gas leaking plumber like Ruttley Services.
